European and American work culture is very different
Although the U.S. economy has the same productivity and living standards as Western Europe, in fact, the two have very different work cultures, and it is difficult for American office workers to enjoy such long vacations. The United States is the only country in all developed countries that treats paid vacation as an additional benefit rather than a basic employee right, and workers have no legal right to any paid annual leave. To some extent, the American "workaholic" culture has many similarities with the "wolf culture" of Chinese companies.
Even for those Americans who are able to take paid vacation time, there is a lot of pressure to actually take time off. Some people worry that their vacations will be seen as a sign of "lazy," or, under the influence of consumerism, choose to "work overtime voluntarily" for a better car and a bigger house, wasting their annual leave in vain.
In contrast, only a few Europeans will "roll" for material conditions, on the one hand because the European class has been solidified, on the other hand, more young people pursue spiritual enjoyment. Working here creates "rest pressure". If you never take annual leave or travel, colleagues may find you uninteresting or even a little weird. Every Monday morning, work and social will start with "How was your weekend/holiday?". When everyone is chatting about their travel experience and vacation life, who wants to just smile awkwardly and "do nothing"?
In 2017, the French government promulgated a new version of the labor law, which stipulates that French employees have the "right to disconnect", and they do not need to manage any work-related text messages, emails and phone calls after work, and do not need to worry about being punished by their employers. The UK does not legally give employees the "right to disconnect ", but it has become a convention. Although most companies will set up a WhatApp group, the content of the conversation in it is usually "The train is canceled, I will be late today", or when you are working remotely and find that Zoom cannot connect, you will say sorry in the group. Sometimes news and jokes are shared, but during off-hours and weekends, members of the group voluntarily remain silent unless there is an emergency.
Laziness or high productivity and creativity in the European work environment with more holidays, less overtime and short working hours? There have been many discussions on this issue, and it actually varies from industry to individual. In the City of London, bankers, lawyers, accountants, consultants and other elites often work overtime behind their glamorous surfaces and are exhausted from work.
In recent years, countries such as the United Kingdom, Spain and New Zealand have carried out experiments on the four-day working system, and their humanized work system has reached a new level.
