In the first nine months of 2024, against the backdrop of a slowdown in global economic recovery and a continued weakening of the global manufacturing industry, the adverse effects of external environmental changes have increased. Domestic effective demand is still insufficient, and China's economy continues to recover and improve, facing many difficulties and challenges. The pressure on the recovery of external demand in the lighting industry has increased, and the industry's exports have slowed down.According to customs data analysis, the export value of lighting products in China in September was about 4.2 billion US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 10%, a decrease of 5 percentage points from the export growth rate in August this year, ranking second in the monthly export value decline this year.
On a monthly basis, the recovery momentum since November 2023 continued in January and February, and exports started steadily overall; Affected by the high base of the same period last year, there was a slight decline in March and April; In May and June, due to a mild rebound in global market demand, the manufacturing industry further rebounded, and the growth rate of exports continued to rebound. From July to September, the growth rate of China's lighting exports slowed down.
In the first three quarters of this year, the total export value of lighting products in China was about 41 billion US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 1.1%, accounting for about 3% of the export value of mechanical and electrical products.
41 billion US dollars
Overall, the cumulative export value of lighting products in China maintained a high scale in the first three quarters of this year, with a year-on-year increase of 23% compared to 2019 before the epidemic, and a decrease of 1 percentage point compared to the previous August. On a quarterly basis, the export volume of China's lighting industry showed a slight recovery in the first quarter, a slowdown in the second quarter, and further pressure on the export growth rate in the third quarter.
1.The export volume of 8.6 billion units, and the export volume of LED electric light source products continues to rise
In the first three quarters, the export volume of LED light source products (LED bulbs, LED tubes, LED modules) in China continued to increase, reaching about 8.6 billion units, a year-on-year increase of about 70%; Accounting for 89% of the export volume of electric light sources for general lighting in China, an increase of 9 percentage points compared to the same period last year, and an increase of 28 percentage points compared to 2019 before the epidemic. The fastest growing export volume of LED electric light source products in China is LED module products. In the first nine months, China's export volume of LED modules was 3.7 billion units, a year-on-year increase of about 508%, achieving the best result since the customs statistics of this product. In addition, due to the accelerated elimination of high energy consuming traditional electric light source products such as fluorescent lamps, overseas markets have strengthened the import of LED bulb products from China. From January to September, the export volume of LED bulb products in China was about 4.5 billion, a year-on-year increase of 14%.
In the first three quarters, the export value of LED electric light source products in China was about 3.5 billion US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 10%, accounting for 89% of the total export value of ordinary lighting electric light sources in China, an increase of 2 percentage points compared to 2023, and an increase of 10 percentage points compared to 2019 before the epidemic. The export value of traditional general lighting electric light source products such as incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps, and halogen lamps is about 450 million US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 20%, accounting for 11% of China's general lighting electric light source export value, a decrease of 1 percentage point from 2023 and a decrease of 10 percentage points compared to 2019 before the epidemic.
Looking at the months, except for the positive growth in export value in January, February, and May, the export value of electric light sources in China showed negative growth in all other months in the first three quarters, similar to the overall trend of China's lighting exports.
At present, there is a certain gap between the export volume of electric light source products in China and the production volume of enterprises above designated size. Firstly, enterprises above designated size are accelerating the adjustment of their production structure. Due to the high added value of lighting products such as lamps, most enterprises above designated size are gradually increasing the production proportion of lamp products and reducing the production of electric light source products. However, in terms of exports, the global market demand for China's electric light source lighting products has not weakened, so the export production orders for electric light source products are gradually spreading from large and medium-sized enterprises to small and micro enterprises. The second is the expansion of the customs statistical base. In 2022, the customs will include products such as "light-emitting diode (LED) modules" in the customs code for electric light sources, expanding the statistical base for electric light source exports. In addition, the high growth rate of exports of products such as "light-emitting diode (LED) modules" has driven the overall increase in the export volume of electric light sources.
2. Export value accounts for 75%, and China's lighting industry has a significant supporting role in exports
From the perspective of the types of lighting products exported in China, the export value of lighting products from January to September this year was about 31 billion US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of about 1%, accounting for 76% of the total export value of China's lighting industry, an increase of 5 percentage points compared to 2019 before the epidemic. The export value of electric light source products in China is about 4.6 billion US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of about 10%, accounting for 11% of the total export value of China's lighting industry, a decrease of 1 percentage point from 2023, and a decrease of 6 percentage points compared to 2019 before the epidemic; The export value of other non major categories was about 5.4 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 5.6%, accounting for 13% of the total export value of China's lighting industry, an increase of 1 percentage point compared to 2023, and an increase of 1 percentage point compared to 2019 before the epidemic. The export trend of fixed lamps, portable lamps, photovoltaic lamps and lighting devices designed to use only light emitting diode (LED) light sources continues to grow, with export value and volume maintaining growth.
From a monthly perspective, the trend of China's exports of lighting related products is basically similar to that of China's lighting exports, with a lower decline in export growth rate than that of electric light source products.
From January to September, about 81% of the export products of all 59 tax codes for lighting in China experienced varying degrees of decline in average export prices, which remained the same as the previous August. The export value of these products with a decrease in average export price accounts for about 97% of China's total export value of lighting products. Among them, the average export price decline of lighting products with 22 tax codes has expanded compared to the previous August, and most of them belong to electric light source products.
