Despite a decline in sales from competitors, Seoul Semiconductor, a semiconductor professional enterprise, has maintained stable growth and narrowed the market share gap with ams OSRAM, the second largest company in the global LED market, to 1 percentage point.
According to a recent report by Seoul Semiconductor, market research firm Omdia recently released these data through the "2024 Global LED Market Share Ranking".
Last year, the sales of Japan's Nichia Chemicals, ranked first, and Germany's AMS Osram, ranked second, were $1.4 billion and $833 million, respectively, a year-on-year decrease of 16% and 27%.
Meanwhile, Seoul Semiconductor rose 0.3% to $722 million. In terms of market share, Nichia Chemical has 12%, Osram has 7%, and Seoul Semiconductor has 6%.
Seoul Semiconductor explained, "We are able to achieve these results thanks to our technological competitiveness. Despite the ongoing uncertainty in the global economy, we still invest over 10% of our sales in research and development and have obtained approximately 18000 patents
Especially, some analysts suggest that obtaining the core technology of "wireless" for micro LED displays and further consolidating its position through patent victory in the Unified Patent Court (UPC) is its biggest competitive advantage.
According to Omdia, it is expected that the Micro LED field will become a key area for future display technology, with a market size of approximately KRW 100 trillion by 2040.
In addition, according to the financial performance released by Seoul Semiconductor for the first quarter of 2025, Seoul Semiconductor achieved a revenue of 239.2 billion Korean won (approximately 1.23 billion yuan) in the first quarter of 2025, a year-on-year decrease of 1% and a month on quarter decrease of 11%. In terms of profit, its operating profit continues to suffer losses; The adjusted EBITDA is KRW 4 billion, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of 2%.
Looking ahead to the second quarter of 2025, Seoul Semiconductor expects its revenue to be between 260 billion and 280 billion Korean won, with a month on month growth of 9% to 17% and a year-on-year decline of about 1% to 8%. It is expected that with the recovery of demand for automotive and IT display and lighting businesses, Seoul Semiconductor's revenue and profitability will gradually improve.
