In today's era of surging technological waves, artificial intelligence (AI) is sweeping across various fields with its astonishing development speed, like a strong whirlwind. From intelligent voice assistant to autonomous vehicle, from medical diagnosis to financial analysis, AI is everywhere, profoundly changing our way of life and work.
In this field of lighting design full of infinite creativity and distinctive personality, what changes will the role of lighting designers undergo under the strong impact of AI? Is it gradually being replaced and disappearing into the tide of technological development? Can we still work together with AI to create a brilliant future? What changes will it bring to the work of lighting designers? With this highly discussed and controversial issue in mind, six designers from the industry take us into their perspectives to explore the future path of lighting design in the new era of technology.
1.Independent lighting designer and design director Chen Zhiwei: Do not be blindly obsessed, nor should you "avoid seeking medical treatment"
Chen Zhiwei believes that the development of AI technology is a product of the progress of the times and an effective supplement to cost reduction and efficiency improvement. We should objectively view AI technology, not blindly indulge in it, and not be afraid of seeking medical treatment. As a lighting designer, one should not overly rely on AI technology and give up traditional skills such as PS technology, EVO computing, 3D, SU, VR, D5 rendering, etc. If the focus is shifted to AI technology that is still evolving and innovating, it is easy to face the situation of "backyard fire" and project delays. Therefore, he believes that AI should maintain a learning attitude and apply AI technology appropriately in suitable projects in order to achieve the effect of "cost reduction and efficiency improvement".
Regarding the convenience that AI technology brings to lighting design, he mentioned that in his work, he will use AI technology to organize text language and organizational frameworks, while also using AI as a database to search for the required content. He also mentioned that there are still some flaws in current AI technology, and the renderings made by AI still need to be overlaid with multiple images in PS post production.
Chen Zhiwei also expressed his views on whether AI can replace the work of designers. He expressed no concern, as design value is the output of "soul", while AI is the tool for expressing "soul". The final decision on whether to use AI results depends on the designer and the client's own judgment. In the process of exchanging ideas, it is more about the designer and the client empathizing, rather than a stunning AI rendering.
2.Luo Huisheng, Design Director of Liad Smart Technology Group Co., Ltd.: AI technology will drive the transformation of the lighting industry
Luo Huisheng also gave his own views on the impact of AI technology on lighting design. "Personally, I am very optimistic about the future of AI technology, just like the emergence of the Internet 20 years ago. From the beginning of hearsay, learning about the Internet through games, to learning professional knowledge through the Internet in college, and now the Internet has penetrated into all aspects of our lives, and we are almost inseparable from the Internet now," Luo Huisheng said.
Luo Huisheng said that since 2022, he has been learning about AI related information from forums, lectures, and the internet. With a curious attitude, he has been trying to use AI to dub animations, change faces, and scenes, then use AI to create images, and now use AI to generate videos. Witnessing the development of AI technology all the way, he felt that the lighting industry was about to usher in a new transformation.
He further stated that the emergence of AI technology not only greatly reduces the cost of creating renderings, but also frees up more time for designers to engage in design creativity. Now, he is trying to use chatgpt to write light show script stories and generate storyboard illustrations in the project; Attempt to use Midjourney text/graph generated diagrams during the conceptual design phase. From conceptual planning to intention map generation, it is basically completed by one person, saving communication time and reducing communication costs.
Regarding the question of whether AI can replace designers, he said, "AI cannot replace designers, after all, AI is only completing conscious visual expression of humans; just like the emergence of cars, carriage drivers not only did not lose their jobs but also became car drivers. They learned car driving skills, improved the quality of transportation services, and compressed transportation time.
3.Zhou Tongyao, Director of the Department of Digital Animation at the School of New Media, Jilin University of Arts: The creative and creative field of lighting design will not be replaced by AI
Zhou Tongyao stated that lighting design belongs to the interdisciplinary integration field, and at the current stage, AI technology is more of a tool to assist the development of lighting and lighting design. It can not only enhance the diversity of lighting design and create more possibilities, but also improve the efficiency of creators, while overall enhancing people's aesthetic experience of lighting design.
Regarding the convenience of AI technology in lighting design work, Zhou Tongyao stated that AI has become an indispensable part of his work. The high efficiency of AI makes it indispensable for many lighting designers to create conceptual plans in the early stages, and they rely more on it when writing and modifying content. When writing code for interactive content, he prefers to use AI for assistance, while when using interactive software to write logic, AI acts as a database for intelligent search, not only providing prompts but also bringing new creative ideas. AI enables him to better complete his work while also helping him learn and master more knowledge.
Zhou Tongyao has his own unique perspective on whether AI can replace the work of designers. He believes that the creative and creative field of lighting design will not be replaced by AI, and the emergence of AI will prompt lighting designers to shift from simple production to more creative work, that is, "from traditional design to creativity".
He further added that with the development of AI, single vertical fields such as design, painting, music, and video production are more easily replaced. If the work of lighting designers involves intelligent control, design, video, music, and requires a deep understanding of hardware and software, then AI is just a tool in their hands. In the future, the more single disciplines and jobs will be easily replaced by AI, while interdisciplinary, integrated, and cross disciplinary fields will be difficult to replace by AI. Furthermore, the emergence of AI will prompt lighting designers to expand their professional skills to a wider range of fields.
