Micro LED can self emit light and has higher contrast and saturation than OLED. It also has the characteristic of being flexible and foldable, making it suitable for ultra-thin displays and considered the next generation of displays. Industry insiders are optimistic that the penetration rate of Micro LED will continue to climb from 2025 onwards, and the wearable field will become the next outlet for Micro LED.
Micro LED manufacturer Qichuang's orders for large-sized televisions and wearable products continued to grow steadily in the first half of 2024, with a particularly significant annual growth rate for wearable products. The company is optimistic that wearable products will become Micro LED's second high-volume product application area, and expects to maintain a growth trend in automotive, wearable device, television and other product applications by 2025.
The large-size TV was the first mass-produced product application of Micro LED. According to Chi Chuang, Samsung's 65 inch Micro LED TV exhibited at the German Consumer Electronics Show received a warm response, and Samsung also plans to gradually introduce Micro LED TVs in Korean department stores in 2024, hoping to promote Micro LED products.
In addition, Qichuang is also in talks with American and German car manufacturers, mainly focusing on Micro LED products that meet the designer's projection goals for future automotive use. Therefore, there will soon be an opportunity to see Micro LED applied to automotive products. Currently, a small trial production will be carried out on concept cars for POC verification.
Li Yunli, Chairman of Qichuang, stated that the challenge facing the Micro LED industry is how to expand production capacity, explore markets, and reduce costs. With the cooperation of the entire industry chain, the development of Micro LED technology is expected to drive costs down rapidly like Moore's Law, and it is expected that costs may be lower than OLED by 2030 at the earliest.
Fan Jinyong, chairman of Longda Electronics, a subsidiary of Fucai, an LED manufacturer, said that the technology of micro LED's rear section is becoming more and more mature, and with the improvement of its yield, it will further reduce the cost of displays. At the same time, there are micro LED related alliances in Chinese Mainland, which is also a precursor to the booming development of the micro LED industry. After all, as long as more manufacturers invest and talk about micro LEDs, industrial technology can be introduced into mass production earlier. On the whole, more people invest and more resources, the industrial progress will be faster.
Fan Jinyong pointed out that the rise of Micro LED does not mean that MiniLED will be replaced. There are significant differences between the two products, and their applicable products and application fields are also different; Micro LED will create new application areas and be applicable to higher-level products.
Panel giant AU has also ventured into the Micro LED industry. Currently, its large-sized TV products continue to be mass-produced and shipped, while also developing the application of Micro LED in fields such as car windows and bodies, AR glasses, wearable products, and transparent displays.
